Studium Generale

The Studium Generale Program of the University of Freiburg can pride itself on a 50 year history in which it has served as a model for many other similar programs and institutions. Its goal is to encourage interdisciplinary dialog – especially between the natural sciences and the humanities – and network specialized knowledge about a complex world. At the core of Studium Generale is an extensive program of lectures and lecture series in which scholars from Freiburg and guests from Germany and abroad present the latest developments in their field and examine interdisciplinary perspectives. Studium Generale has welcomed many illustrious scholars and writers in the past, including Martin Heidegger, John Searle, Elias Canetti, Paul Celan, Marie Luise Kaschnitz, and Peter Huchel, as well as leading representatives from business and industry like Reinhold Würth, chairman of the advisory board of the Würth Foundation, and former president of Nestlé AG Helmut Maucher.
Furthermore, its Colloquium Politicum has become well known throughout the country for bringing together academics, politicians, and representatives of notable German and international institutions to discuss contemporary political and social developments. Notable past participants include Lord Dahrendorf, former Federal President Richard von Weizäcker, EU Commissioner for Competition Karel van Miert, EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and the British historian Ian Kershaw.
The lecture program is complemented by concerts, podium discusions, readings, and excursions which endeavor to increase the visibility of music, literature, and fine arts at the university. Last but not least, Studium Generale also offers a broad spectrum of courses and workshops focusing on various topics, ranging from fine arts to handicraft and natural history. All events are open to the public, and most are free of charge. In this way, the program builds bridges between the university, the city, and the entire region.
