International Partnerships

International Networks

The University of Freiburg is a member of three international networks:

• Academic Consortium 21 (AC21)
  The networking activities of the AC21 consist chiefly in the exchange of students, scholars, and administrative employees as well as the regular organization of international forums.
• League of European Research Universities (LERU)
  LERU was founded in 2002 as a network of leading European research universities. Its main objectives are to stimulate cooperation in the areas of higher education and (fundamental) research policy in Europe, particularly with a view to the increasing competition from independent research institutions, and to coordinate exchange programs for postgraduates.
  A university can only become a member of LERU by formal invitation. Criteria for receiving an invitation include research volume, third-party funding, and the quality of graduate education at the university.
• ASEA-UNINET
  This network was founded by the University of Innsbruck and now includes 55 European and Southeast Asian universities. It focuses on joint research projects, exchange programs (visiting scholars, students, employees), postgraduate and postdoctoral programs, and special training courses. The network serves as a communication platform for joint projects, especially in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

Partnerships and Cooperation

In addition to its involvement in networks, the „Albertina“ also maintains institution-wide and faculty-level partnerships with a wide range of higher education institutions in 30 countries and on all five continents. Moreover, the university is connected to universities all over Europe through its participation in the ERASMUS  Programme.
