Excellent Minds Foster Excellence

Thanks to the success of its Institutional Strategy in the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments, the university was able to found the international research institute “Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies” (FRIAS) and attract highly-qualified junior researchers, internationally renowned scientists, and visiting scholars to Freiburg. A core component of the Institutional Strategy of the University of Freiburg, the FRIAS serves to promote top-level research and establish new interdisciplinary areas of competence and knowledge. The FRIAS is concentrating initially on four disciplines at four schools: literature and linguistics, materials research, history, and life sciences.
