Excellence Initiative and Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments
In 2007 the University of Freiburg received the highest possible distinction in the nationwide Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments. The university has been successful in all three areas of this competition (Graduate School, Cluster of Excellence, Institutional Strategy “Windows for Research”). In 2012, the University could surpass these achievements in the areas of Graduate Schools and Clusters by establishing a second Cluster of Excellence.
In June of 2016, the German federal and state governments enacted the follow-up program to the Excellence Initiative, the Excellence Strategy. The University of Freiburg also aims to submit proposals for this program.
